Two Houses One Family

In the Worman’s Mill community just north of the city of Frederick stands the ruins of a house built by Jacob Steiner (1713-1748) about 1746.  He was a German settler, and he built the house by the Mill Pond, to be near his grinding mill.  Jacob died at 35 years old in 1748.

A model of the house, seen below, was made from well-documented descriptions of the house.  Made of stone and half-timber framing, the house design derived from traditional East German building styles.  The irregularly placed windows and doors, and central chimney, reflected early American construction.

Two generations later, Jacob’s grandson Stephen Steiner (1767-1829) built a house at the corner of West Patrick and South Jefferson Streets that reflected more of an English-American architectural influence.  Built in brick, the house has simple jack arches over evenly-spaced windows and doors.  The original kitchen is still intact, with a large cooking fireplace.

The Steiner House is now owned by the Frederick Women’s Civic Club, and tours are available on certain Saturday afternoons.

Frederick’s history of house building provides a rich architectural milieu that allows vintage house lovers to dream about restoring old Victorian or other architectural “queens” to their former grandeur.
