Holiday House Hunting Tips
We just had our first snow in Frederick, MD! Yay or not yay, Winter is upon us and so is the holiday season!
Everyone is rushing around shopping, decorating, cooking, and prepping for trips and many gatherings to celebrate this time of year! But to all of those go-getters who can handle all of that plus the process of buying a home - I commend you! There is truly never a bad time of year to buy! I particularly like this time of year because while other buyers may be distracted, the serious folks are still out shopping and making some great purchases without the strain of multiple offers and bidding wars. I'm not saying you are getting $20k off the asking price, but I do find in most circumstances this month that there is some wiggle room for negotiations - which is nice in a still very low inventory market!
So, what do you need to know while house hunting during the holidays? Plenty - as usual - and here are my best tips:
1) Be Prepared for Bad Weather - don't expect to drive in the ice and snow. As a Realtor, I refuse even in a 4WD SUV. I drive enough as it is, and slick conditions are not worth the risk to me or to my clients regardless of confidence.
2) Be Prepared for Sellers to Say NO - I try to be respectful of everyone's holiday traditions and schedules. The few days leading up to a major holiday and a day or two after, you could get a some NO's to your showing requests. It doesn't mean they don't want to sell their home.
3) Wear your Boots! Some houses you may want to see could be vacant. It's possible you might be walking through some not-yet-shoveled, snowy sidewalks. Wearing proper shoes will also allow you to walk around the exterior of the house too!
4) Speaking of boots, wear your socks! Expect to take your shoes off when you enter a house especially in snow and rain.
5) Look passed the decor. Don't let the decor, extra twinkle lights, etc distract you. Easier said than done, but try to keep focused on the structure.
6) And lastly, try to hold off on the wild goose chase! Your house hunting marathon will surely be much better planned and executed once the wrapping paper and glitter settle.
