BOOM there it is your dream house. It’s in the right place: schools, commute to work is okay, and it is close to the important things in your life. The lender says you qualify. You drive by the home, it is still for sale. You’ve been referred to a Realtor, and he or she says it is possible to make all this happen, this is what you need to do. For some of you, the most painful task the Realtor asks you to do is declutter.

The 5-box Approach*

Decluttering the home can be overwhelming. However, applying the five-box method to the one room at a time approach to reorganizing and discarding items may help you feel less anxious and more in control of the process.

Box 1: Items that need to be put away. Place items that belong somewhere else in the home in this box. Eventually, you’ll put them away; the intention is to put them somewhere while you’re clearing the room.

Box 2: Items to be fixed. Place items that you plan to fix or that need to be washed or cleaned in this box, such as toys, dirty clothes or scuffed shoes.

Box 3: Items to donate. Items in this bin are in good condition, but you no longer need or use them. They can be given to friends or family, sold online or donated to a local charity.

Box 4: Items to be recycled. This is where you’ll place items made of paper, plastic or glass that you don’t want to keep. Add all empty drink bottles, food containers, and magazines or newspapers.

Box 5: Items to discard. Place expendable items in this box that you can’t recycle or donate.

This information helps you get started, no matter how much stuff you have. You can deploy all of this method, or cherry pick what works best for you. Having a method to apply to your decluttering assignment, will help you in so many ways. You can, and will be successful. Keep up the good work, your next home is right around the corner.
